Best lion's mane supplement
James BevanUpdated Oct 21, 2026
Lion's mane is the mushroom that turns up in several of the brain supplements we've audited, and it's also sold on its own as a capsule or powder. But do the stacks give you the amount and the part of the mushroom the studies used, and is a single capsule the better buy? To find out, we've checked every lion's mane product we've audited against the studies, worked out what each costs a day, and picked the one we'd buy.
Quick verdict

What our audit found
We checked six brain supplements and two single capsules that contain lion's mane, and these five findings matter most if you're buying.
-
None of the six stacks reaches the studied amount
The most any of them prints is 500 mg, against the 1,800 mg the lowest-dose trial used.3 Qualia Mind's 125 mg of an 8 to 1 extract would still be only 1,000 mg even if the ratio counted.
-
Two stacks use mycelium
Mind Lab Pro and Alpha Brain Black Label mix mycelium with fruiting body. The memory and attention trials used fruiting-body powder.123
-
One stack doesn't say what's in the capsule
Hunter Focus prints no part of the mushroom and no form.
-
No label prints hericenones or erinacines
These are the compounds behind the nerve-growth idea. Of the lion's mane products we checked, only Nootropics Depot's lot report measures any of them, 1.7 mg of hericenes and hericenones a capsule, with no erinacine figure.10
-
The trial in healthy young adults found a one-dose effect only
A single 1.8 g dose made people quicker on a speed test an hour later, but after 28 days there was only a trend towards lower stress.3
Best lion's mane supplements
Nutricost's capsules give 2,100 mg of fruiting-body powder a serving, the studied material at the studied amount, and they're the ones we'd choose.
Fruiting-body powder at 2,100 mg in three capsules, the material and amount the trials used. It publishes no lab report, and its product page carries a California Prop 65 warning for lead.

We also audited Double Wood Organic Lion's Mane and don't recommend it. It scores 4.6 out of 10, because two capsules give 1,000 mg, 800 mg less than the studied amount, and part of it is mycelium.8
Lion's mane in brain supplements
This table ranks the audited brain supplements that contain lion's mane, with the amount each one gives, its form, and what each formula costs for the studied floor.
Brain supplements we've audited that contain lion's mane mushroom
fruiting body, 30% polysaccharides
$10.05 of the stack per 1,800 mg of lion's mane mushroom
mycelium and fruiting body, extract strength not stated
$22.49 of the stack per 1,800 mg of lion's mane mushroom
organic, mycelium and fruit body
$8.28 of the stack per 1,800 mg of lion's mane mushroom
fruiting body extract, no ratio or marker
No brand-site price
RealLionsManeâ„¢ 8:1 organic extract
$114.48 of the stack per 1,800 mg of lion's mane mushroom
organic, form not stated
$10.80 of the stack per 1,800 mg of lion's mane mushroom
The cost column scales each brain supplement's full daily price to 1,800 mg of lion's mane, as a fraction of a serving, not a dose to take. It isn't a price for lion's mane alone. If that's the ingredient you're buying for, three Nutricost capsules give you 2,100 mg of fruiting-body powder for 57 cents.7
Is lion's mane worth buying, and who it suits
Lion's mane is a long shot worth trying if you're older and worried about your memory. We'd only consider fruiting-body powder at about 2 to 3 g a day. The trials are few and small, with the clearest result in older adults with mild cognitive impairment over 16 weeks.1
Lion's mane is also sold as Hericium erinaceus or yamabushitake, and its nerve-growth claims come from cell and animal studies. No trial here measured nerve growth in people.
In Mori 2009, adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment scored better than placebo on a cognitive scale from week 8. The gain faded within four weeks of stopping.1 Saitsu 2019 found an improvement on one of three cognitive tests.2
For younger, healthy adults, there's one pilot trial. People were quicker on a speed test after a single dose, but a month of daily use brought no clear change.3
It suits an older adult willing to take about 3 g of fruiting-body powder a day for three months and judge it on something concrete. We wouldn't choose it for a quick boost or count on mycelium-on-grain products, which no memory trial used.
We found no regulator assessment of lion's mane as a supplement. Double Wood's label tells anyone pregnant or nursing, or taking other medication, to check with a physician first.8 For side effects and safety in full, see a 2025 systematic review of lion's mane as a supplement.6
How much to take, and when
The trials tell you how much lion's mane to look for on a label, and how long they gave it.
- Study dose benchmark
- 1,800 mg a day
- Doses in studies with a benefit
- 1,800 mg to 2,880 mg a day
- Most-studied dose
- About 2.9 g of fruiting-body powder a day, for 16 weeks
- Time to any effect
- Within an hour on one speed test. Eight weeks or more for the memory scales in older adults.
Daily doses in the trials ran from 1.8 to about 2.9 g of fruiting-body powder. The 1.8 g trial found only a one-dose effect.3 The longest, Mori 2009, gave about 2.9 g a day to older adults for 16 weeks.1 Saitsu 2019 ran 12 weeks, and we couldn't confirm its dose.2
To reach those amounts, you'd need three to five 700 mg capsules or two to three scoops of a 1 g powder. With 500 mg capsules, you'd need four to six a day.7911
What the trials found
Our evidence grade for lion's mane rests on the human trials, the positive ones and the ones that found nothing.
PreliminaryA few small trials of fruiting-body powder, mostly in older adults with memory complaints. The one trial in healthy young adults found a single-dose effect only.
The four trials in the table used fruiting-body powder or food made from it.

The results were small and mixed. Mori 2009 had the clearest result, with cognitive-scale scores better than placebo from week 8 in 30 older adults. The effect faded after stopping.1
Saitsu 2019 found an improvement on one test of three.2 In Nagano 2010, two questionnaire items were better than placebo. Depression and indefinite-complaint scores fell only against where people started.4
The one mycelium trial gave people with mild Alzheimer's disease an erinacine A-enriched extract, three 350 mg capsules a day for 49 weeks.5 That patient trial used a special extract. Its findings don't tell you what to expect from the mycelium-on-grain powder in some brain supplements.
A 2025 systematic review gathered the trials and their reported side effects.6
What it's stacked with
These are the ingredients lion's mane most often sits next to in brain supplements, and what the evidence says about each pairing.
- CiticolinePreliminaryNext to lion's mane in all six stacks we audited. No trial of the pair.
- PhosphatidylserineModerateNext to lion's mane in Mind Lab Pro, Qualia Mind, Hunter Focus and Alpha Brain Black Label. No trial of the pair.
In the brain supplements we audited, lion's mane sits next to bacopa, citicoline and phosphatidylserine, mostly in the memory formulas. We found no trial of lion's mane with any of them.
