Genius Joy Review 2026

Genius Joy is The Genius Brand's mood supplement, built around SAMe and 5-HTP with rhodiola, theanine, ginseng, coffee fruit, tyrosine and B vitamins in four capsules. But are those ingredients at the amounts their research used, and who should steer clear of it? To find out, we've checked every dose against the published studies, read the warnings and refund terms, and looked at what buyers have to say.

  • SAMe 1,600 mg

We don't pick one. MSD Manuals warns that SAMe can bring on manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder, and that some antidepressants taken with it can push serotonin too high.

  • Coffee fruit extract 200 mg

No pick. None of the brands we buy from sells coffee fruit extract, and the trials used whole coffee cherry extract (NeuroFactor), not the coffee bean extract on NeuroQ's label.

  • 5-HTP 50 mg

We don't pick one. Health Canada's 5-HTP monograph says not to use it if you take antidepressants, and to ask a practitioner first if you take anything else that acts on serotonin.

What's good, and what isn't

Pros

  • 5-HTP, rhodiola and theanine reach the amounts their studies started from
  • Every amount is printed on the label, with no blend
  • The jar warns anyone on antidepressants or with bipolar disorder before they start

Cons

  • The label doesn't say how much SAMe the 1,000 mg contains, and tyrosine is about a seventh of its studied dose
  • No lab report or certificate is published to back the 3rd party lab tested seal
  • Refunds are capped at 50 dollars per household, less than a one-time bottle

Why Genius Joy scored 5.3 out of 10 in our scientific audit

  • Dose fit40%66

5-HTP (about 98 mg against 50), rhodiola (300 mg) and theanine (100 mg) earn full credit. SAMe gets half because the label doesn't say whether 1,000 mg is the salt or the SAMe, coffee fruit is 100 of 200 mg, the red ginseng is root powder rather than G115, and tyrosine is about 280 of 2,000 mg. The vitamins aren't scored.

  • Evidence30%36

Each ingredient's evidence counts in proportion to its dose credit. The SAMe and 5-HTP trials were in people being treated for depression or Parkinson's rather than healthy adults.

  • Transparency20%80

Every amount is printed and nothing sits in a blend. It loses points because we read the label from the brand's image, the jar and product page give different directions, and the label doesn't say how much SAMe the 1,000 mg contains.

  • The jar carries a 3rd party lab tested seal, but we found no certificate of analysis or lab report for Genius Joy.

Worked out under method audit-v2.0. How the rating is built

Score history
  1. Nov 5, 2026 First audit published (5.3)

We checked the label, compared each dose with the human research and published the review.

Genius Joy is built around two serotonin ingredients, SAMe and 5-HTP, with five more alongside them. Three get full credit. 5-HTP, rhodiola and theanine all reach the amounts their studies started from. The rest fall short. SAMe gets half credit because the label doesn't say how much SAMe its 1,000 mg actually contains, and the coffee fruit is half its benchmark. The red ginseng is plain root powder rather than a tested extract, and tyrosine comes in at about a seventh of its studied dose.

Evidence trails the doses, partly because the SAMe and 5-HTP trials were in people being treated for depression rather than healthy adults. Transparency loses points for the SAMe wording, and testing scores zero, because we found no lab report or product certification.

The label lists 14 ingredients in a 4-capsule serving, 25 servings to a 100-capsule bottle, with every amount printed and no blend.1 Underneath, it says the product isn't recommended for anyone under 18, with a pre-existing medical condition or taking prescription medication. The back of the jar is more specific. It tells anyone on antidepressants to check with their prescribing doctor first, says people with bipolar disorder should avoid SAMe, and warns against use in pregnancy or while nursing.2 The directions on the jar build up over three days to two capsules twice a day on an empty stomach, and suggest taking it for 60 days. That's twice the 30-day reimbursement window, so you'd have to decide about a refund before the suggested course is over.3

“Fully-dosed, transparent ingredients for maximum efficacy.”

Partly

The transparent part holds up. Every amount is on the label and nothing is hidden in a blend.1 Fully dosed is a stretch, though. Tyrosine is about a seventh of its studied dose, the coffee fruit is half, and the ginseng is a powder rather than a tested extract.456 For SAMe, the label doesn't make clear how much is actually in the capsules.

“Adomix® SAMe and HTPurity®. Elevates mood and serotonin for better well-being.”

Partly

SAMe and 5-HTP are both part of how the body makes and uses serotonin, and both have some trial evidence for depression.78 That research was in people being treated for depression or Parkinson's, though, and we found no trial of the two together in a supplement like this. We found no trial of Genius Joy itself.

“3rd party lab tested”

Unverified

The seal is on the front of the jar,2 and the product page adds "Manufactured in Our Own NSF-Certified Facility."9 A certified facility means the manufacturing process gets audited, which isn't a test of what's in the bottle, and the brand's FAQ calls the same facility GMP certified.10 We found no certificate of analysis or lab report for Genius Joy, so there's nothing for you to check.

“If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, we're here to help.”

Partly

The help has limits. The return policy says the brand doesn't take returns at all. It offers reimbursement within 30 days of delivery on orders from its own site, but caps every refund at 50 dollars per customer and household, with possible restocking or service fees.3 That's less than a one-time bottle costs.

Doses used in studies that showed a benefit

Genius Joy has 1,000 mg. The study dose we use as this ingredient's benchmark is 1,600 mg, so it's 600 mg short.7 That 1,000 mg may be the weight of the tosylate disulfate salt rather than SAMe itself, and the label doesn't say which, so the real gap could be larger.

Study dose benchmark from Papakostas 2010, 800 mg twice a day added to an SSRI, 6 weeks7

SAMe is the biggest ingredient, printed as "SAMe Tosylate Disulfate (as Adomix) 1000mg."1 Tosylate disulfate is a salt, and in the salt form SAMe makes up only part of the weight, so it matters whether the 1,000 mg is the whole salt or the SAMe inside it. The label doesn't say, so we give it half credit. Our benchmark is 1,600 mg a day, taken as 800 mg twice daily alongside an antidepressant in 73 people whose depression hadn't responded to it alone.7 That's a treatment setting, not a daily mood supplement for healthy adults.

5-HTP is 100 mg of a Griffonia seed extract at 98 percent, so about 98 mg of 5-HTP, nearly twice our 50 mg benchmark. That benchmark comes from a small four-week trial in 25 people with Parkinson's disease, where 50 mg a day improved one depression scale but not apathy.8 It's the dose that counts here, but there's little research on 5-HTP for mood in healthy people.

Study dose benchmark from Reay 2005, 200 or 400 mg, single dose6

Tyrosine and ginseng are the weakest parts. The 350 mg of N-acetyl-L-tyrosine works out at roughly 280 mg of tyrosine, against a single 2,000 mg dose in the trial we use as its benchmark.4 The 250 mg of red ginseng is root powder with no ginsenoside figure, while the trials behind ginseng used a standardized extract called G115.6 So it gets half credit at most.

Also on the label are vitamin D 25 mcg, vitamin B1 1.5 mg, vitamin B2 1.7 mg, vitamin B3 20 mg, vitamin B5 10 mg, vitamin B6 2 mg, vitamin B12 6 mcg. These have no cognitive dose range for people who aren't deficient, so they don't count toward the formula score.

How we choose the studies and set these ranges

Vitamin D and six B vitamins are there at around 100 to 250 percent of the daily value. That's useful if you're short of them, but they aren't scored as mood or focus ingredients.

The products that share the most cognitive ingredients with Genius Joy are shown first. Any product sharing at least two can be added.

Genius Joy is unusual in leaning on SAMe and 5-HTP, so there isn't a close match among the formulas we've reviewed. If it's the calmer-focus side you want, Mind Lab Pro has rhodiola and theanine with citicoline and bacopa. It skips the serotonin ingredients and costs $2.30 a serving. Thesis Stress Reset is aimed at mood and stress too, with ashwagandha and saffron instead.

Price and where to buy

A one-time bottle costs $59.99 on the brand's site, which is $2.40 a serving, and a subscription takes 20 percent off. It was sold out on the brand's site, though,9 so for now you'd have to buy it somewhere else. iHerb had it in stock that day.13 It's also on the brand's Amazon store and at Walmart, both run by Pattern, the brand's sales agency.

Safety notes

This is a serotonin formula, and that's where the cautions are. The NIH says SAMe may not be safe for people with bipolar disorder and may interact with antidepressants and other supplements that raise serotonin.16 5-HTP raises the same concerns, including serotonin syndrome when it's combined with antidepressants,17 so don't take Genius Joy with an antidepressant or MAO inhibitor unless your doctor agrees. SAMe may also weaken levodopa, the main Parkinson's drug.16 Ginseng might lower blood sugar and interact with some medications.18

The label says it isn't for anyone under 18, with a medical condition or on prescription medication, and the jar adds pregnancy, nursing and bipolar disorder.12 We're researchers, not doctors.

Final thoughts

Genius Joy prints every amount and gets 5-HTP, rhodiola and theanine to their study doses, which is more than many mood supplements manage. But the SAMe amount is unclear, tyrosine and coffee fruit are well short, and the ginseng isn't a tested extract. If it doesn't suit you, the refund cap leaves part of a single bottle, and most of a multipack, unrefunded.

The bigger question is whether you want a serotonin supplement at all. If you have bipolar disorder, are pregnant or nursing, or are under 18, the label and jar say not to take it. If you take an antidepressant or other medication or have a medical condition, don't start it without your doctor. If none of that applies and you want SAMe and 5-HTP in one bottle, Genius Joy is a transparent way to get them, but start with a single bottle.

FAQ

What is Genius Joy for?
The brand sells it for mood, with SAMe and 5-HTP for serotonin plus rhodiola, theanine, ginseng, coffee fruit and tyrosine. We found no trial of the finished product.
Can you take Genius Joy with antidepressants?
Not without your doctor. SAMe and 5-HTP both act on serotonin, and the NIH warns that SAMe may interact with antidepressants. The jar itself tells anyone on antidepressants to check with their prescribing doctor first.
How many capsules do you take?
Four a day. The jar suggests starting with two for three days, then taking two on waking and two in the afternoon, on an empty stomach.
Does Genius Joy contain caffeine?
No caffeine is listed. The coffee fruit extract is the only coffee ingredient, and the label gives no caffeine figure.
Is Genius Joy third-party tested?
The jar carries a third-party lab tested seal, but we found no lab report or certificate of analysis to back it up.
Does Genius Joy have a money-back guarantee?
Not a full one. The brand doesn't accept returns and caps reimbursement at 50 dollars per household, within 30 days of delivery, for orders from its own site.
