Nootropics Depot Caffeine + L-Theanine Review 2026
James BevanUpdated October 23, 2026
Nootropics Depot's Caffeine + L-Theanine is about the simplest focus supplement you can buy, one capsule with 100 mg of caffeine and 200 mg of theanine. But does the pairing do more than a mug of coffee, and is this the version worth buying? To find out, we've checked both amounts against the published trials, read the brand's lot reports, and looked at what reviewers and buyers say.

In this review
What's good, and what isn't
Pros
- Caffeine (100 mg) and theanine (200 mg) are both above the doses we use as benchmarks
- A public lab report for each lot measures both ingredients, 105 mg of caffeine and 205 mg of theanine on the newest
- Buyers rate it 4.4 out of 5 across 746 ratings
Cons
- No trial has tested 100 mg of caffeine with 200 mg of theanine, and the combination trials gave single doses to small groups
- Omnient Labs, which issues the lab reports, was started by Nootropics Depot, and the reports don't test for microbes
- Returns only for unopened bottles within 30 days, and Amazon lists it as non-returnable
Why it scored 9.4 out of 10
- Dose fit40%100
Both ingredients clear their benchmarks, caffeine at 100 mg against 40 mg and theanine at 200 mg against 100 mg, so the formula earns full marks.
- Evidence30%85
Caffeine's evidence is strong and theanine's moderate, and both doses meet the studies, so theanine's grade is all that holds this bar back.
- Transparency20%95
Both amounts and the caffeine form are printed, with nothing hidden. It loses a few points because we read the label from the brand's site, not from a bottle we bought.
- Testing10%100
Each lot has a public report from Omnient Labs, an ISO 17025 accredited lab that Nootropics Depot started, measuring both ingredients and heavy metals. There's no microbe test, and it isn't in the NSF Certified for Sport, USP or Informed Sport registries.

Score history
Oct 23, 2026 First audit published
We checked the label, compared each dose with the human research and published the review.
If all you want from a focus supplement is the caffeine and theanine pairing, this is the cleanest way we've found to buy it. One capsule holds 100 mg of caffeine and 200 mg of theanine, both above the doses we use as benchmarks, and nothing else is competing for space. Every lot has a public lab report that measures both, and at 33 cents a capsule from the brand it's one of the cheapest formulas we've audited.
The 9.4 is a score for the label, though, not a promise about how you'll feel. No trial has tested this exact 100 mg and 200 mg pairing. The combination trials used smaller amounts or more caffeine, most gave a single dose to a few dozen people, and one of the more careful ones found the pairing did no better than caffeine alone. The few points it drops come from transparency, because we read the label from the brand's site rather than a bottle we bought, and from theanine's evidence, which is moderate rather than strong.
The claims, checked

The facts panel matches our records. It's one capsule a serving, in bottles of 60 or 180, with 200 mg of theanine and 100 mg of caffeine.2 The panel also prints its own dosing guide, morning use once or twice a day, and says peak effects are immediate. That overstates it a little, since the trials measured their effects 20 to 90 minutes after the dose.1213
One oddity sits in the brand's FAQ, which says the capsules "come in 300mg servings." That's the weight of the two ingredients together. The caffeine is 100 mg a capsule, and it's the number to count.1
“Clinically Validated Combination”
PartlyThis badge sits at the top of the product page, which cites one study, a 2017 trial in 20 healthy men.1 That trial paired 200 mg of theanine with 160 mg of caffeine, not 100 mg, and found faster reactions with the combination, but no interaction between the two for reaction time.20 The pairing has real trial support. This exact dose doesn't.
“Our capsules are available in two scientifically optimized ratios”
Doesn't hold upThe product page offers 100 mg of caffeine with 200 mg of theanine "for sustained calm focus," or the reverse "for enhanced alertness."1 We found no trial that compared ratios, and none that tested 200 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of theanine. The 2014 analysis of the combination trials found the size of the effect tracked the caffeine dose more than the theanine dose.18 The ratios are a choice of caffeine strength. Nothing has optimized them.
“Each batch undergoes comprehensive testing for identity, purity, and potency through independent laboratories”
PartlyThis one mostly holds up, which is rare. The product page links a lab report for each lot. The newest one for this format measures 105 mg of caffeine and 205 mg of theanine a capsule, confirms both by identity testing, and finds lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury below its limits.3 The report carries the name of Omnient Labs, which holds ISO 17025 accreditation, although the methods listed in its published accreditation scope don't include the theanine test this report uses.5
"Independent" is the word to weigh. Nootropics Depot's own page says Omnient "was started as an ISO accredited lab to do advanced lab testing for Nootropics Depot," and the two list addresses a few doors apart on the same road in Tempe.34 The reports don't test for microbes. Every report for this format that we opened also lists the same capsule batch and identical results, so they look like one round of testing printed for several lots. It isn't listed by NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport either.1011 It's still more than most focus supplements publish, but it's not an arm's-length lab.
“Pharmaceutical Grade Purity”
PartlyThe badge appears on the product page.1 The lab report confirms identity and the amounts, but it doesn't state a pharmaceutical standard or a purity percentage for either ingredient,3 so the grade itself is the brand's word. The page also doesn't claim Suntheanine, the branded theanine used in many trials.

Doses used in studies that showed a benefit
Caffeine + L-Theanine 100 mg / 200 mg Capsules has 100 mg, between the 40 and 300 mg single doses used in studies that showed a benefit.25
Study dose benchmark from McLellan 2016, about 40 to 300 mg a dose, across the trials it reviews25
Caffeine comes as 100 mg of caffeine anhydrous, about a mug of coffee. Research reviews find reliable gains in attention and alertness from 40 mg to 300 mg,25 so one capsule sits well inside that window. Two capsules, the most the label suggests in a day, would still only be 200 mg. This is the ingredient you'll actually feel.
L-theanine · Moderate evidence
Doses used in studies that showed a benefit
Caffeine + L-Theanine 100 mg / 200 mg Capsules has 200 mg, between the 100 mg single dose and the 400 mg a day used in studies that showed a benefit.28
Study dose benchmark from Dassanayake 2023, One dose of 100, 200 or 400 mg28
Theanine comes in at 200 mg, twice our 100 mg benchmark. That benchmark comes from a 2023 trial in 32 young adults where a single 100 mg or 200 mg dose of theanine alone made simple reaction time slightly faster.28 The 200 mg in this capsule is the amount most theanine research uses, including a 2026 analysis of 31 randomized trials that found faster choice reaction time after one 200 mg dose.27
The pairing itself has its own trials, and they're the part worth reading closely. In 2008, 27 adults given 50 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of theanine got faster and more accurate at switching between tasks an hour later.12 A 2010 trial in 44 young adults found better task-switching and alertness from 40 mg of caffeine with 97 mg of theanine.13 Another, with the same amounts, found the switching gain but no lift in self-rated alertness.14 A 2014 analysis of 11 trials found moderate benefits for alertness and attention-switching in the first two hours.18 Those trials used about half this capsule's amounts, and several were run by researchers working for a tea company.
The closest doses to this capsule come from one research group's trials pairing 200 mg of theanine with 160 mg of caffeine. They found faster reactions in 20 healthy men,20 less activity in the brain's mind-wandering regions in nine,21 and sharper attention in 37 sleep-deprived adults.22 A 2008 trial with 150 mg of caffeine and 250 mg of theanine also found faster reactions and less mental fatigue.15
Not every trial agrees. In 2012, caffeine and theanine each cut errors on a two-hour attention task in 27 people, but "the combined treatment did not confer any additional benefits over either compound alone."17 A 2015 trial at 75 mg of caffeine and 50 mg of theanine found theanine cancelled caffeine's effects altogether.19 Our reading is that caffeine does most of the work. Theanine may take some of the edge off, but the evidence for that part is thinner than the marketing suggests.
There's nothing else to score. The capsule is microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and a vegetable cellulose shell, with no vitamins, no blend and no third ingredient to judge.2

Nutricost and Sports Research sell the same pairing, and both score well with us, Nutricost at 8.4 and Sports Research at 8.3. Neither publishes lot reports the way Nootropics Depot does, which is most of the gap.
If you want something more than caffeine and theanine, Transparent Labs Cognition costs $1.67 a serving and adds citicoline, rhodiola, phosphatidylserine and huperzine A to 100 mg of caffeine and 100 mg of theanine. Vyvamind keeps closer to this capsule, with 75 mg of caffeine and 150 mg of theanine plus citicoline and tyrosine, at $2.33. Both cost several times as much a day, and you're paying for the extra ingredients, not for more of these two.
Price and where to buy
Nootropics Depot sold the 60-capsule bottle for $19.99 when we checked, which is 33 cents a capsule.1 The 180-capsule bottle costs twice as much for three times the capsules, so it's the better buy once you know you like it. The store has no subscription,8 and its banner reads "Get free same-day shipping on US orders over $50," so a single small bottle costs a little more delivered.7
The brand also sells both sizes through Amazon, shipped by Amazon. Amazon was dearer than the brand for the small bottle and about the same for the large one when we checked, and Amazon's listing marks it non-returnable.9

What other reviewers say

Innerbody Research
Roundup entry, written review · Dan Min, medically reviewed by Matt Segar, MD · Updated Sep 13, 2026
“Simple though it may be, its solid balance of L-theanine and caffeine gives us good reason to like it.”

Fitness Volt
Roundup entry, label comparison · Tom Miller, CSCS · Updated Aug 14, 2026
“This is the best overall pick because the label does not try to win by mystery. A 100 mg caffeine dose is easier to place before training than mega-stim formulas, and the 200 mg L-theanine pairing fits readers who want focus without feeling overcooked.”
SuppCo

“Nootropics Depot Caffeine + L-Theanine Capsules 100/200 mg is a capsule supplement with a TrustScore of 8.6 (Very good).”
None of the reviewers we found reports taking this capsule, so their verdicts rest on the label, as ours does. Innerbody names the 100/200 version its best caffeine pill without giving a score,30 and Fitness Volt ranks it first for workout focus at 4.8 out of 5 from a label comparison.31 SuppCo's rating database gives it 8.6 out of 10, while noting that product-specific testing "is not currently verified by SuppCo,"32 which the public lot reports above would answer. Innerbody's price table is out of date against the brand's store, so go by the store.
What buyers report
Safety notes
This is a caffeine pill first. One capsule is about a mug of coffee, so one capsule plus two mugs puts you near 300 mg, and the label's second capsule takes you to roughly 400 mg, the most the FDA cites as a daily amount not generally linked with harm in healthy adults.26 Take it in the morning and keep track of coffee, tea, energy drinks and pre-workouts on the same day. In a sleep-lab trial, 400 mg of caffeine taken even six hours before bed cut sleep by more than an hour.29
Theanine didn't stop caffeine's jittery feeling in a 2008 trial of 48 adults, although it did blunt the rise in blood pressure.16 If caffeine makes you anxious or your heart race, don't expect this to fix it, since the one trial that looked found theanine didn't reduce caffeine's jitteriness. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or taking medication for blood pressure, a heart condition or ADHD, ask a doctor first. Small trials in children and teenagers with ADHD have tried the pairing, and in the larger one only the prescription stimulant improved reaction time.2324 We're researchers, not doctors.
Final thoughts
This is the caffeine and theanine pairing with nothing added, at amounts above the studies' starting points, with a lab report for every lot and a price that's hard to beat. What it isn't is a tested formula in its own right, since no trial used 100 mg with 200 mg, and the best evidence says caffeine does most of what you'll notice.
If you like coffee but not the way it sometimes leaves you, this is a sensible, cheap thing to try. If caffeine already disagrees with you, the one trial that looked found theanine didn't reduce caffeine's jitteriness, and plain theanine without the caffeine is the better buy. Start with one capsule in the morning on a day you've skipped coffee, and see how it compares.
