Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb sold for memory, and it's easy to buy as a single capsule. But does the capsule you're looking at hold one of the extracts the trials used, and how long would you need to take it before you'd know? To find out, we've checked every bacopa supplement we've audited against the studies, worked out what each costs a day, and picked the one we'd buy.

Quick verdict

Nootropics Depot BaCognize Bacopa

The one we'd buy. A named trial extract at 300 mg in one capsule and a lab report on every batch, for 29 cents a day.

What our audit found

We checked every bacopa capsule and stack we've audited, and these are the five things that matter most if you're choosing one.

  • Look for a named extract, or 40 to 55% bacosides

The trials used named extracts, CDRI 08 (sold as KeenMind and Synapsa), BacoMind and BaCognize, or extracts standardized to bacosides.1356 Nootropics Depot's capsules name BaCognize and Synapsa, Double Wood's names BacoMind, and NOW and Nutricost print 40% and 50% bacosides.1618212324 A named extract can print a low figure, because the percentage depends on how the lab measured it. Nootropics Depot says an extract sold as 55% held 9% on its more precise test.27

  • Two of Amazon's bestselling bacopa capsules miss it

Himalaya's caplet, third in Amazon's bacopa category when we checked, prints 24% saponins and names no extract. Carlyle's "2000 mg" is the weight of herb behind 666 mg of a 3 to 1 extract, and the label gives no bacoside figure.252628

  • The trials gave 300 mg a day

That's the amount in most of them, and 250 mg is the lowest daily amount in one that found a benefit, in older adults with age-related memory decline.1346 One capsule covers 300 mg for both Nootropics Depot picks, NOW and Nutricost, and Double Wood takes two. Nutricost's two-capsule serving is 1,000 mg, more than the 300 to 450 mg a day in the trials a 2012 review looked at.2412

  • The trials ran 12 weeks, and the gains are in recall

Most 12-week trials found people recalled word lists better than on placebo, and a 2012 review found little change outside that.1312 Two 12-week trials found no gain on any memory test, at 450 mg in healthy adults and at 300 mg in adults with memory complaints.89

  • If your stack has bacopa, check the extract and the amount

Three of the 12 stacks we audited give 300 mg or more of a named or 40 to 55% extract. CogniMax and BrainPill give 320 mg of Synapsa, and Legion Ascend 330 mg at 50%. Nooceptin and Momentous Brain Drive print the studied strength but give 150 mg. Mind Lab Pro, NooCube and Thesis Neuroprotection print 20 or 24%, and Alpha Brain, Hunter Focus, Neuro-Peak and Brainol print no strength at all. Eight more hide bacopa in a blend with no amount.

Best bacopa supplements

Nootropics Depot's capsule gives 300 mg of BaCognize, the extract in the medical-student trial, with a lab report on every batch, for 29 cents a day, and it's the one we'd choose. Its Synapsa capsule is the CDRI 08 extract and also carries batch reports. Double Wood names BacoMind and needs two capsules, and NOW and Nutricost print 40% and 50% bacosides without a lab report.

The cost column scales each formula's full daily price to 250 mg of bacopa, which is a fraction of a serving and not a dose to take, so it isn't what the bacopa alone costs. Dynamic Brain, Focus Factor, Magic Mind, Organixx Brain Health 8, Primal Mind Fuel, RediMind, SuperFlash and Youthful Brain put bacopa inside a proprietary blend with no amount, so they aren't in the table.

If bacopa is why you're buying, a single capsule gives you 300 mg of a trial-matched extract for 16 to 42 cents a day at the brands' own sites. Only the two Nootropics Depot capsules publish a lab report that measures the bacosides, from a lab the brand founded, and that's why they're the only two at 9.9.171920 Double Wood's independent report confirms it's bacopa but gives no bacoside amount.22

Is bacopa worth buying, and who it suits

We'd try bacopa for memory, but only as a daily habit for 12 weeks. Most trials of named extracts found people recalled word lists better after three months, and two found no gain at all.1389

In Stough 2001, healthy adults on 300 mg of KeenMind learned a word list faster and kept more of it than on placebo, and the gap was widest at 12 weeks.1 Morgan 2010 found the same kind of gain in 98 healthy adults over 55 taking BacoMind, along with more stomach cramps and nausea.3 Kumar 2016's abstract says BaCognize improved medical students' scores, but the full paper shows two tests out of the set beat placebo.5

The trials that found nothing are worth knowing about. Sathyanarayanan 2013 gave 450 mg a day to 72 healthy adults for 12 weeks and found no difference on any test. Lopresti 2025 gave 300 mg of a newer extract to adults with memory complaints, with no change in learning, attention or working memory.89

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb, also called brahmi. Its extracts are standardized to bacosides, the compounds thought to do the work, and the trial extracts are sold under brand names, CDRI 08 as KeenMind and Synapsa, plus BacoMind and BaCognize.1101835

It suits you if you want to try something for memory and will take a named extract at 300 mg every day for three months before you decide. It doesn't suit you if you want an effect you'll notice today, because the memory results come from daily use.

NOW's label says bacopa is for adults only and may upset your stomach, and that you should ask a doctor first if you're pregnant or nursing, take thyroid hormones, MAO inhibitors or drugs that act on acetylcholine, or have an overactive thyroid.23 In the trials, the side effects reported most were stomach cramps, nausea and more frequent stools.39

How much to take, and when

Here's what the trials gave, and how it maps onto capsules.

Study dose benchmark
250 mg a day
Doses in studies with a benefit
250 mg a day, up to 640 mg as a single dose
Most-studied dose
300 mg a day of a named extract, as one dose or 150 mg twice a day
Length of the trials that found a benefit
12 weeks in most of them. Six weeks in one trial of medical students, and a few hours after a single dose in two small trials.

Most trials gave 300 mg a day, as one dose or 150 mg twice a day.1235 The lowest daily amount in a trial that found a benefit was 250 mg, as 125 mg twice a day in Raghav 2006, and that's the amount we check labels against.6 BacoMind's maker tested 450 mg a day, and 450 mg was also the dose in Sathyanarayanan 2013, the trial that found nothing.78

The first KeenMind trial has a correction. In 2015 the authors of Stough 2001 changed each capsule from 150 mg of extract to 160 mg, saying the manufacturer had given them the wrong figure.14

Each of our picks covers 300 mg in one capsule except Double Wood, which takes two. Nutricost's label serving is two capsules, 1,000 mg, so one capsule is the closer match to the trials.24

Examine's page says to take bacopa with a meal because bacosides dissolve in fat, and Doctor's Best says with or without food.2930 Neither cites a trial, and we didn't find one that compared the two. Nootropics Depot's BaCognize label says once a day, in the morning.16

What the trials found

Bacopa's trials are small, most ran 12 weeks, and the extract changes from one trial to the next.

StrongMost 12-week trials of named extracts found better recall of word lists. Two other 12-week trials found no gain, and single doses gave small, mixed results.

In adults without memory complaints, most trials found better recall of a word list after daily use, and the one at 450 mg found nothing.138

  • Stough 20011Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

    Healthy adults

300 mg a day as published (KeenMind, the CDRI 08 extract)

Faster visual processing, a better learning rate and better retention of a word list than placebo, with the biggest change at 12 weeks.

  • Stough 20082Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 90 days

107 healthy adults, 62 of whom finished

150 mg twice a day (KeenMind)

More accurate on a spatial working memory test, with fewer false alarms on an attention task. The other measures didn't differ.

  • Kumar 20165Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6 weeks

    60 medical students aged 19 to 22

150 mg twice a day (BaCognize)

Two memory tests beat placebo, repeating digits backwards and recalling a short story. The rest didn't differ.

  • Calabrese 20084Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

54 adults aged 65 and over without dementia, 48 of whom finished

    300 mg a day (a standardized whole-plant extract)

Better delayed recall of a word list, but only once the authors allowed for starting scores. A color and word attention test improved too.

  • Morgan 20103Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

98 healthy adults over 55, 81 of whom finished

    300 mg a day (BacoMind)

Better learning and delayed recall of a word list than placebo. Bacopa brought more frequent stools, stomach cramps and nausea.

  • Sathyanarayanan 20138No clear benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

    72 healthy adults aged 35 to 60

    450 mg once a day

No difference from placebo on any memory or thinking test. Anxiety trended lower.

In adults with memory complaints or age-related memory decline, the two older trials found gains, and the newest, with a different extract, didn't.679

  • Raghav 20066Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

40 adults with age-related memory decline, 35 of whom finished

    125 mg twice a day (55% bacosides)

Story recall, paired-word learning and a mental control task improved over the 12 weeks, though not every test beat placebo at every visit.

  • Barbhaiya 20087Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

65 adults aged 50 to 75 with memory complaints, 44 in the final analysis

    450 mg a day (BacoMind)

Four memory and attention tests improved more than on placebo. Seven of the nine authors work for the extract's maker.

  • Lopresti 20259No clear benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks

101 adults aged 40 to 70 with memory and attention complaints, 87 of whom finished

    300 mg a day (Bacumen)

Learning, attention and working memory didn't differ from placebo. Stress scores fell more, and more people reported side effects on bacopa, mostly digestive.

Two small crossover trials from the same research group gave single doses and tested people within hours.1011

  • Benson 201410Showed a benefit

    Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover, single doses

    17 healthy adults

One dose of 320 or 640 mg (CDRI 08)

Better on two attention tasks one and two hours later, with lower cortisol. The authors asked for a larger trial.

  • Downey 201311Showed a benefit

    Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover, single doses

    24 healthy adults

One dose of 320 or 640 mg (CDRI 08)

320 mg helped on some rounds of a long task, and 640 mg didn't. Stress and fatigue ratings didn't change.

Two reviews pull it together. Pase 2012 looked at six 12-week trials of three extracts at 300 to 450 mg a day and found 9 of 17 free-recall tests improved, with little change elsewhere. Kongkeaw 2014 pooled 437 people from nine trials and found faster times on two attention tests.1213

What it's stacked with

Bacopa rarely sits alone in a stack. These are its usual neighbors, and what's known about each pairing.

Ginkgo sits next to bacopa in seven of the 12 stacks here, and L-theanine in eight. The one trial of bacopa with ginkgo, Nathan 2004, gave 85 healthy adults 300 mg of bacopa and 120 mg of ginkgo a day for four weeks, a third of the time most bacopa trials ran, and found no effect on any test.15

Questions people ask

What does the bacoside percentage on a bacopa label mean?
It's the share of the extract that's bacosides, the compounds the extracts are standardized to, and it depends on how the lab measured it. Nootropics Depot says an extract sold as 55% held 9% when it tested it with a more precise method, so a named trial extract is a surer match than a high figure.
How long does bacopa take to work?
Most of the trials ran 12 weeks, and the first one measured the biggest change at the end rather than at five weeks. Two small single-dose trials found small changes within hours, but the memory results come from daily use.
Should you take bacopa with food?
Examine says to take it with a meal because bacosides dissolve in fat, and Doctor's Best says with or without food. Neither cites a trial, and we didn't find one that compared the two. Some of the trials did report more stomach upsets on bacopa than on placebo.
Will bacopa help if my memory is fine?
Maybe a little. Most 12-week trials in healthy adults found better recall of word lists, but one found no gain on any test, and a 2012 review found little change outside free recall.
