Caffeine is the best-studied ingredient in any focus supplement, and most of us already get it from coffee. A pill gives you a number you can count, though, and the stacks print anything from 25 to 150 mg. So we've checked every caffeine pill and brain supplement with caffeine we've audited against the trials, worked out what each costs a day, and picked the one we'd buy.

What our audit found

We checked every caffeine pill and brain supplement with caffeine we've audited against the trials, and these are the five things that matter most if you're choosing one.

  • Every plain caffeine pill we audited clears the benchmark in one capsule

The trials found sharper alertness and faster reactions from about 40 mg, and every caffeine-only pill we read gives 100 or 200 mg in one capsule or tablet.1 All five score the same 8.9 out of 10, because none of them publishes a lab report, so the cheapest capsule at the brand's own site decides our pick.1617

  • One label goes past the FDA's daily figure

Prolab's label says one 200 mg tablet once or twice a day and no more than three, which is 600 mg.19 That's above 400 mg a day, the most the FDA cites as not generally linked with harm in healthy adults, and it's before any coffee.10 Genius and Nutricost's 100 mg pill stop at four capsules, 400 mg.1820

  • The stacks give you a coffee's worth or less

The brain supplements we audited print 25 to 150 mg of caffeine a serving, and Thesis Motivation's 150 mg is the most. Alpha Brain Black Label's 25 mg falls below the 40 mg benchmark, and so does one other stack in the table, at 35 mg. A plain 100 mg capsule costs a few cents.

  • Daily coffee drinkers may notice less

In a 2013 trial of 369 adults, caffeine mostly undid the sleepiness and slower reactions of a night without it, and in light users the drop in sleepiness came with more jitteriness.5 A 2005 trial found gains in regular and light users alike, so the trials don't fully agree, but tolerance is real.4

  • Time-release caffeine has little behind it

Genius sells a slow-release capsule.20 The one placebo-controlled trial we found of a time-release caffeine had just 10 men. It tested a formula with tyrosine, ginseng and other ingredients in it, and a supplement company funded it.9

Best caffeine supplements

BulkSupplements' capsule holds 100 mg, and its label says one, for 5 cents a day. It's the one we'd choose, because it leaves room for the coffee you already drink, though it publishes no lab report. Nutricost's Natural Caffeine is 200 mg in one capsule, from green tea, which suits you better if you don't drink coffee at all.

We also audited three other caffeine pills, and they score as well as our picks. We'd still buy one of the two above. Nutricost's 100 mg capsule scores 8.9 out of 10, but Nutricost's own site doesn't sell it, only its Amazon store.18 Prolab scores 8.9, and it's a 200 mg tablet whose label goes up to 600 mg a day.19 Genius scores 8.9 and costs the most a capsule, for the slow-release coating we covered above.20

The cost column prices each formula at the 40 mg benchmark, without rounding up to whole capsules, so it's a price comparison and not a dose to take.

If caffeine is the part you notice, it's the cheap part. One BulkSupplements capsule gives 100 mg for 5 cents a day, more than Vyvamind's 75 mg and as much as Qualia Mind's.16 What a stack adds is everything else in it, so judge it on those ingredients.

Is caffeine worth buying, and who it suits

Caffeine's evidence for alertness, attention and reaction time is strong, from about 40 mg. We'd buy it as a plain 100 mg capsule, not inside a stack, because the trials found less for memory and decision making, and a capsule costs a few cents.17

The best evidence is a 2016 review for the US military. It found that from about 40 mg to about 300 mg, alertness, vigilance, attention and reaction time improve, while memory and decision making show less consistent effects.1 Two other reviews agree. Caffeine helps most on simple tasks when you're tired, and it doesn't usually help learning or memory.67

So it suits you if you want a measured dose on a day you need to stay sharp, without guessing how strong the coffee is. By the FDA's figures, a 12-ounce brewed coffee can hold anywhere from 113 to 247 mg. So what a pill gives you is a set amount on the label, not a stronger dose.10 If you already drink two or three cups a day, a pill adds to that, and it won't do much the coffee isn't already doing. FitnessVolt's guide, updated in August 2026, says 100 mg is often enough for focus, and we'd start there too.22

Count every source in the day, coffee, tea, energy drinks and pills, and keep the total under 400 mg, the most the FDA cites as not generally linked with harm in healthy adults.10 Lift Vault's guide, updated in May 2025, says any dose below 400 mg poses no risk. But the FDA itself says people vary widely in how sensitive they are and how fast they clear it.2310 If you're pregnant, ACOG, the US obstetricians' college, says less than 200 mg a day doesn't appear to be a major factor in miscarriage or preterm birth.14

MedlinePlus says to check with a doctor first if you have an irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, anxiety, migraines or ulcers.12 Some antibiotics, asthma medicines and heart medicines interact with caffeine, and Drugs.com names ciprofloxacin, theophylline and tizanidine among them.1215 If you take a prescription medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before you add caffeine pills.

Don't buy caffeine as a loose powder. The FDA says seizures can follow about 1,200 mg taken quickly, which is less than half a teaspoon of pure caffeine.10

How much to take, and when

Here's what the trials gave, and how it maps onto capsules.

Study dose benchmark
40 mg (single dose)
Doses in studies with a benefit
About 40 to 300 mg in one dose
Timing
Usually 30 minutes to an hour before the task

We check labels against 40 mg, the low end of the 2016 review's range, and a 1987 trial found sharper vigilance and faster reactions at just 32 mg.12 At the other end, Navy SEAL trainees kept awake for 72 hours did better on 200 and 300 mg, and the authors thought 200 mg looked best under those conditions.3

One BulkSupplements capsule is 100 mg, and its label says one capsule.16 One Nutricost Natural capsule is 200 mg, and the label says one a day.17 Neither capsule can be split, so if you also drink coffee, the 100 mg is easier to fit under 400 mg. We wouldn't take more than a label recommends.

Most trials tested 30 minutes to an hour after the dose, and in the SEAL trial the effects were largest at one hour and still there at eight.34 That long tail matters at night. Caffeine's half-life in adults is three to seven hours, and birth control pills and pregnancy can both make it longer.13 EFSA says even a single 100 mg dose may affect sleep in some adults when it's taken close to bedtime.11 Total Shape's guide, updated in July 2026, says caffeine clears in four or five hours. But with a half-life of three to seven hours, much of it is still there after five, so we'd take it in the morning or early afternoon.24

What the trials found

Caffeine has a deep trial record, and these are the trials that show what a single dose does.

StrongReviews of the trials find sharper alertness, attention and reaction time from about 40 mg. The effects on memory and decision making are less consistent.

From 32 mg up, single doses sharpened vigilance and sped up reactions, in rested adults and in trainees kept awake for three days. The catch is in regular users, where one large trial found caffeine mostly undid the effects of skipping it.2345

  • Lieberman 19872Showed a benefit

    Double-blind, controlled

    20 healthy men

    One dose of 32, 64, 128 or 256 mg

Better auditory vigilance and visual reaction time at every dose, from 32 mg. No rise in anxiety even at 256 mg.

  • Lieberman 20023Showed a benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled

68 Navy SEAL trainees after 72 hours without sleep

    100, 200 or 300 mg, tested 1 and 8 hours later

200 and 300 mg improved vigilance, choice reaction time and sleepiness, most at 1 hour and still at 8. Marksmanship didn't change.

  • Haskell 20054Showed a benefit

    Placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced crossover

24 regular caffeine users and 24 people who rarely have it

75 or 150 mg in a drink, tested 30 minutes later

Faster reactions and more alertness in both groups, after a night without caffeine.

  • Rogers 20135No clear benefit

    Double-blind, against placebo

212 regular users and 157 light or non-users

100 mg, then 150 mg 90 minutes later, after a night without caffeine

In regular users it mostly undid the effects of going without. In light users, sleepiness fell but anxiety and jitteriness rose.

Two trials tested timing. The sleep trial found a cost even at six hours before bed, and the one time-release trial we found used a formula with other ingredients in it.89

  • Drake 20138No clear benefit

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover

    12 healthy adults aged 19 to 48

400 mg at bedtime, or 3 or 6 hours before

Measured sleep fell by more than an hour at every timing, even 6 hours before bed.

  • Gonzalez 20159Showed a benefit

    Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover

10 men who use caffeine regularly

194 mg as plain caffeine, or in a time-release formula with tyrosine, ginseng and other ingredients

Blood caffeine peaked at about 3 hours on plain caffeine and 6 on time-release. Over hours 5 to 8, only time-release improved average upper-body reaction time. Industry-funded.

What it's stacked with

Caffeine turns up in the focus and energy formulas, usually next to theanine or tyrosine. These are its usual neighbors, and what's known about each pairing.

Caffeine and theanine have their own trials, at 40 to 160 mg of caffeine. Several found sharper attention or task switching with the pair.212528 But in a 2012 trial the pair did no better than either one alone, and in a 2015 trial at 75 mg of caffeine and 50 mg of theanine, theanine cancelled caffeine's effects.2627

Questions people ask

How much caffeine should you take?
The trials found sharper alertness and faster reactions from about 40 mg, and the 2016 military review's range runs to about 300 mg. We'd start with one 100 mg capsule, and keep the day's total from every source under 400 mg, the most the FDA cites as not generally linked with harm in healthy adults.
Is a caffeine pill stronger than coffee?
Not usually. The FDA puts a 12-ounce brewed coffee at 113 to 247 mg, so a 100 mg pill is often less. What a pill gives you is a set amount on the label, which makes the daily total easier to count.
How late in the day can you take caffeine?
Its half-life in adults is three to seven hours. In a 2013 trial, 400 mg six hours before bed still cut measured sleep by more than an hour, and EFSA says even 100 mg may affect sleep in some adults close to bedtime. We'd take it in the morning or early afternoon.
Is time-release caffeine better?
We've seen little evidence that it is. The one placebo-controlled trial we found had 10 men, tested a formula with other ingredients in it, and was funded by a supplement company. It found a longer, flatter curve, and only a small reaction-time effect late in the day.
